Like fantasy playgrounds that appear to have sprouted and grown all own their own, North Carolina based artist Patrick Dougherty weaves these intricate sculptures from sticks, saplings and vines. His site specific sculptural installations invite the public to wander in and around their elaborate rooms - and quite frankly, I’m ready to move in. The major obstacle to me sending out change of address cards is that that these pieces are temporary in nature and typically only last a season or two. By now I’m sure you all have heard about the horribly devastating earthquake in Haiti and I’m also sure that like me you feel so heartbroken and helpless in face of the suffering of the Haitian people. Nothing will bring back those who perished, but the survivors need our help. From all the reports I’ve read, the biggest need in Haiti is just for basic relief and supplies…food, water, shelter, medical supplies. That’s why I’ve decided to coordinate a fundraiser for the Haitian people with 100% of the proceeds to go to the Red Cross International Response Fund. The Red Cross has been helping those in need since 1881 and they have already pledged an initial 1 million towards Haiti Relief, let’s help them give more.
How you Ask?
I’m coordinating a silent auction of items that have been donated by indie crafters, artists and designers. Each day I will share a new batch of items on Indie Fixx that you can bid on via the comments. You will be able to see everyone’s bids and rebid if you get outbid. The highest bidder will win the item and pledges the amount bid towards the Red Cross International Response Fund. The item will then be sent out in the mail to you from the artist, crafter or designer who donated it.............

Hers was purple, pink, and green with ruffled edges. Ina Kelley had to show off the shawl she crocheted for a daughter, because after a year of living between homeless shelters and the streets, it’s one of the only things she truly had.
“I’m still working on my blanket,’’ the 46-year-old said, dressed in nightwear and sandals, opening a bag full of colored yarn. “Being stressed, depressed with being homeless on the streets, it helps with your mind.’’
Others call it therapeutic. All agree it has helped create a sense of community.
At the Barbara McInnis House in the South End, where people dealing with homelessness also suffer the pains of medical illnesses, a surprising sort of therapy has brought them together with volunteers in what has become a curative social group. Young and old, men and women, a grandmother and a young pregnant woman all use arts and crafts to ease their minds of struggles ranging from disabilities to kidney disease to drug addiction.............

The pouf pattern is available from Pickles, a Norwegian site that offers free patterns for knitting, crochet and sewing. Be sure to read the project's comments. We learned some great tips, such as rather than hunt for a thick enough yarn create the pouf, you can make your own by plying — take many different yarns and hold them together as it they were one, cast on and knit carefully. If you start now, you should have a nice cozy pouf by fall! (There's a smaller version too!)
