an entire village - knit

here are the pictures

Knitted village put up for sale

The knitted village will be publicly displayed so people can buy their favourite object

A knitted replica of a Kent village with 100 features including teenagers smoking in a bus shelter has been put up for sale.

The model of Mersham, near Ashford, has been knitted by members of the village's 40-strong Afternoon Club over the past 23 years.

The group has raised about £10,000 for their village hall by exhibiting it.

But the creation is now to be split up and sold off because it has become too large to be transported.

Since 1986, thousands of hours of handiwork have gone into the village.

a pin i made

using grungeboard by tim holtz and his crackle paint

i shrunk down some pictures of a grrrly skull and glued them (on the back) over the eyes so the skulls showed through on the front. i did this AFTER the crackle paint. after the crackle paint was dry, i used a bit of distress ink and i glued on some tiny rose buds i picked up somewhere (i think they were actually stickers). i then glued a piece of paper over the back just so the eyes wouldn't get poked out. i coated the whole front (then the back too) in diamond glaze. the last step was gluing on a pin back

i was inspired by margot potter the impatient crafter (i have posted the video below before, but it's so cool, why not post it again???)

the peggy 2 light emitting pegboard kit

from evil mad science

.............

Peggy 2 is an updated version of our "Peggy" light-emitting pegboard display. Version 2 adds simple animation capability and Arduino compatibility. Like its predecessor, Peggy 2 provides a quick, easy, powerful and efficient way to drive a lot of LEDs-- up to 625-- in a big matrix covering almost a square foot of area. You can make an LED sign for your window, a geeky valentine for your sweetie, one bad-ass birthday card, freak the holy bejesus out of Boston, or instigate the next generation of low-pixel-count video games. Your call. It's a versatile, high-brightness display. How you configure it and what you do with it is up to you.

The display can run off batteries (3 'D' cells) or an optional ac adapter, and is designed to drive as many LEDs as you care to solder into the holes. The board can accommodate LEDs in any color and in several of the most common sizes, including 3mm, 5 mm (standard T-1 3/4 size), and 10 mm................

with kate mccgwire

and her pigeon feathers (from moulting birds)

By Jessica Allan

Kate MccGwire graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2004 and has since exhibited all over London, winning a solo show at 2009's Heart of Glass. Her most recent installations are made from thousands of pigeon feathers, flowing water and even a mouldy growth on a wall.

Hello Kate. Why pigeon feathers?

I am currently using pigeon feathers as they come from a bird that is generally reviled - regarded as vermin and referred to as ‘rats with wings’. I started to collect pigeon feathers that moulted from the birds in a shed next to my studio – I realised that they were actually very beautiful.

FELT
IS
WICKED
COOL
Humble Fabric Takes Center Stage
By ROBERTA SMITH
Felt is the feel-good fabric of all time. Sturdy, cosseting, beautiful, shape-shifting, dye-friendly, it serves many purposes and offers countless pleasures. Some but certainly not all of its latest uses are outlined in “Fashioning Felt,” an illuminating exhibition of around 70 items — mostly furnishings and garments — at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Felt’s purely artistic possibilities are also being explored in scattered shows at New York galleries.
Though you may never have thought much about felt, there’s a lot more to it than you’d expect. One of the first manmade textiles, it requires almost no special tools, certainly not a loom. It began to be made 8,000 years ago, a millennium before the earliest forms of weaving. Its fairly unadulterated natural ingredients were and remain animal wool, soap and water mashed into a kind of pulp (initially by bare feet), then dried under pressure and made into everything from caps to rugs and capes to yurts............
PICTURE:
A detail of Janice Arnold’s installation, “Palace Yurt.” Felt’s history began 8,000 years ago, before the earliest forms of weaving. Created from animal wool, soap and water and mashed into pulp, felt is then dried and made into everything from caps to rugs and capes to yurts.

boing boing has a great posting up

seems like someone is copying sublime stitching and that AIN'T RIGHT! i've posted about this great site before. i'm NOT an embroiderer (or wasn't) BUT coincidentially, YESTERDAY even before i read this boing boing posting i got out my threads, my needles and my hoop. i swear i did. coincidence???????? i think not. i'll be ordering from sublime TODAY. it's the right thing to do!

Mister Jalopy: "$upport Independent Business and Reject the Fakers"

.................A few years ago, I wrote:

Everything you love, everything meaningful with depth and history, all passionate authentic experiences will be appropriated, mishandled, watered down, cheapened, repackaged, marketed and sold to the people you hate.
Punk rock was profoundly important to me. The power, the rage and the message. It was authenticity incarnate. A clarity and directness with a political message that was overpowering. As big corporations watched, they started to smell money. They circled and studied. And they aped the aesthetics, but we knew it was fake. Now, I hear The Clash or The Stranglers or The Undertones and I am still amazed. The corporate fakers faded away and the real deal survives...............

.................Urban Threads has so brazenly ripped off Sublime Stitching that I can't help but wonder if Jenny Hart is the only artist that has been ripped off. Please, take a moment to look at the Urban Threads catalog of designs and see if you recognize any other chicanery. Let us know, we will pass it along...................

Wooden Jewels for the Novice
Make intricate wood-inlay jewelry with the simplest of skills.
By
Diane Gilleland

You don't need any woodworking skills to make this fancy-looking wooden jewelry. The secret is inlay strips, which are sold pre-made as decorative elements for fine woodworking projects. They're beautiful and easy to cut, and have lots of craft applications.

Here, with just a little glue and varnish, we'll make an inlay pendant, earrings, and zipper pull.......
